The Quest for Essence
INFO
In 2020, Nikon commissioned LUKSTUDIO to design its first China flagship on Shanghai’s Huaihai Road, followed by stores in Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Beijing. In 2024, LUKSTUDIO returned to renovate and expand the Shanghai store.
Evolving from symbolic material use to refined minimalism, the renovation continues the Beijing “Urban Viewfinder” concept. Material and light convey “technology, nature, and sustainability,” while shaping a community hub for photography lovers.
The ground floor serves as the entrance and core display area. A circular light-strip ceiling and a central lens-inspired light panel set the tone, while curved niches, a reception desk, and seating blend seamlessly into the walls. The balance of openness and enclosure gently guides visitors inward. Soft daylight and glowing panels shape a serene, flowing atmosphere.
The second floor, expanded for product displays, takes inspiration from a “Natural Island.” Floating tables on slim steel bases create a light and exploratory space. At the center, a circular platform beneath lens-shaped ceiling lights highlights Nikon’s technology, while tripod kits by the windows invite real-world testing.
Behind the main platform, elm conical tables use layered lighting to soften shadows and enhance comfort. Wall displays in metal and wood add flexibility, and window-side seating provides a relaxed spot for testing or purchases. Classic cameras and accessories are presented with frosted acrylic panels and light-guiding shelves, offering both clarity and refinement.
The third-floor workshop is divided into two zones. The front, fan-shaped, hosts small events, while a curved ceiling curtain softly separates the rear. Modular seating allows flexible arrangements. At the back, the preserved double-pitched roof and wood finishes create warmth, with track lights extending from ceiling to wall to give shelving a light, dynamic form.
Natural and artificial lighting trace walls, props, and functions, layering the space while expressing the theme “Light is the soul of photography.” Curved forms and varied textures are tailored to the products, reflecting Nikon’s commitment to quality. Together, these scenes invite visitors to immerse, explore, and connect in an inspiring community hub.
